After four weeks it is again time to wrap up the RET program.  The month of July has been very productive and lots of fun.  Please don’t forget to email your presentations and MATLAB projects to Alisa.  Please also send them to me (sbroad@alumni.nd.edu) so I can have a record of them.  It has been a great pleasure to work with each of you this summer.  Please let me know if there is any way I can assist you during the school year.

Symposium tomorrow, then August!

Today we will be looking at basins of attraction.  Try this file: basin.m.

Julia sets: Julia.m or a link to a link anyway.  Also, this gives you a path to the MATLAB database at the University of Stuttgart in Germany.  Many of the files are in English.

Mandelbrot sets: Mandelbrot.m

Two weeks of our four week program have elapsed.  Here’s what we have accomplished so far:

1. Learned basic MATLAB syntax.
2. Toured differential equations, numerical algorithms, some basics of linear algebra and MATLAB functions for solving these numerically.
3.  Experimented with examples of numerous dynamical systems.
4. Wrote MATLAB code to model and display the results of several dynamical systems, continuous, discrete and stochastic.
5. Toured the qualitative theory of dynamical systems, e.g. fixed points, periodic cycles, asymptotic limits.

Not bad for eight days…

We began with random walks both 1d and 2d.  Then we talked about other stochastic dynamical systems.  However, most of our day was spent forming groups and exploring possible project topics.

The hourglass attractor with parameter a=1.85.

We talked about discrete dynamical systems.  Among the topics discussed were the logistic map and its cobweb diagram, the hourglass attractor and the sunflower attractor.  Links give MATLAB code for implementing the difference equations.

We discussed continuous dynamical systems, including damped harmonic oscillators, predator-prey models, lorenz attractors.

As we did last year, we shall have a BBQ prior to the end of the program.

Thursday, July 29
11am-1pm
St. Patrick’s park

Please comment with what you plan to bring.

Please include in your comments whether or not you plan to bring family or friends, specifically how many others you may bring (for planning purposes).  Keep in mind that we will still meet for our regular time AFTER the BBQ!
